“Next Gen Scotland: Inspiring Future GP Leaders”

Our piece this week is from Dr Ros Morrin, a GP in Scotland and amazing leader of our Scottish Next Gen GP programme. Ros has been a tireless supporter of Next Gen, and recently ran a virtual programme in Scotland on almost no budget, with phenomenal feedback….

Paying it forward to ensure future GP leaders have a better chance of raising the voice of our profession, was the driving force behind bringing Next Gen to Scotland.

My journey with Next Gen began after hearing Nish present at the RCGP Conference in Glasgow in 2018, and it has been a remarkable experience of perseverance and growth. From initially struggling to secure funding, to launching a 2020 programme that was ultimately cancelled, and finally evolving into Scotland’s most successful virtual programme in 2024, the journey has been challenging yet incredibly rewarding.

Personally, being part of the Next Gen family has taught me so much. Each speaker brings fresh insights and ideas, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible individuals I never imagined I would. It’s also given me the chance to strengthen areas of my skill set, which has benefited other aspects of my career.

Above all, it’s the relationships I’ve built that I value most—whether with participants, the wider national Next Gen community, or our Scotland speakers. This was most evident at our recent in-person event, which had a superb atmosphere of energy and enthusiasm. A key takeaway from the Scotland programme is encouraging young leaders to prioritise building relationships and connecting in person whenever possible.

It’s been a privilege to help inspire the next generation of GP leaders, and to be part of the solution for our profession’s future.
